Calls to trans suicide hotline double in wake of NC's anti-LGBT bill.

According to Trans Lifeline, the amount of calls have "nearly doubled" since Governor McCrory passed HB2, which allows for discrimination against LGBT individuals, especially those in the trans community.

The average amount of calls to the lifeline peaked at nearly 200 per day. After HB2 was signed into law, the call center saw a spike of 357 calls per day.
It is important to understand that suicide rates in the trans community are 22 times the national average. Nearly half of all trans individuals have attempted suicide. Many trans individuals report bathroom discrimination in the workplace as a trigger to suicidal thoughts.

North Carolina isn't the only state seeing an increase in callers at the Trans Lifeline. With so many anti-LGBT laws passing throughout the country, call centers are seeing a spike in calls everywhere from trans individuals experiencing a crisis.

My Two Cents

Since these anti-LGBT laws passed, I have become increasingly concerned for the community, more specifically, the trans community. The trans community, and trans people of color, have it worse than anyone in this country. The community is scared, and feeling hopeless by the day. It isn't fair for this community to be in such distress. They haven't done anything wrong. They just want to pee!

Governor McCrory needs to understand that people's lives are at risk. Not only do trans individuals fear for their safety at a bathroom, they also have to deal with the emotional trauma because of the discrimination. This trauma could trigger a suicidal thought or impulse. That will be on his hands. He, and HB2's backers, are responsible for the suicides.

If people want to go there and say that the trans community is a "group of perverts," I have some news for you: The majority of perverts in this country are white, middle-aged, conservative, married men with kids.
Years ago when I was trying (and failing) to be Christian, there was an old white guy in the congregation who would always stare at my chest (I wasn't wearing anything flashy since I was a fat chick. I was modestly dressed). It made me feel so uncomfortable.

I'd rather share a bathroom with every trans person in the world, than to share space with that conservative pervert.
