Kentucky clerk continues to deny gay marriage licenses, despite supreme court ruling.
Kim Davis has made headlines recently for denying same-sex marriage licenses in Rowan Country, Kentucky. Davis asked the court to be excused from that part of her job on the grounds that gay marriage goes against her religious beliefs. The court denied her request. Last week, two same-sex couples came into the office to obtain their marriage license. Davis was not working out front when they came in, but her staff was instructed by her to turn away the two couples. Davis came out and the following exchange occurred: One of the couples: “Under whose authority are you not issuing licenses?” Davis replied: “Under God’s authority!” Both couples appealed to the Morehead Sheriff. The Sheriff stated that while he cannot enforce the Supreme Court's decision, Davis will likely be held in contempt.
