Remembering legendary WWE diva Chyna (1969/1970-2016)

If you're just waking up, you've probably heard that the world has lost a beloved legendary female wrestler.

Joan Marie Laurer, better known as Chyna, was found dead on April 20, 2016. She was 45/46.
News of her death was confirmed on her Twitter account, with the following message:
"It is with deep sadness to inform you today that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero. She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her."

Police received a call from her manager, Anthony Anzaldo, after Chyna had not been heard from. The apartment manager also called police. When officers arrived on the scene, they found her deceased on her bed. While there is an investigation ongoing, officers do not suspect foul play.

Chyna became a legend in the ring before she turned 30. She entered the WWE wrestling scene in 1997, and immediately took charge. She dominated just about any match she fought in. She became the first female wrestler to enter the Royal Rumble. She also became the first woman to qualify for the King Of The Ring championship. More impressively, she was also the first female wrestler to be the number one contender for the WWF championship.

After her departure from the WWE in 2001, she continued wrestling with New Japan Pro Wrestling and Total Nonstop Wrestling, before officially retiring from wresting in 2011. In the years following her departure from the WWE, she posed for playboy, made six adult films, taught English in Japan, and wrote a book.
Chyna did struggle with substance abuse issues. She went on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew for help. In 2008, on her birthday, she was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious. She had cuts on her arms.

My Two Cents

Chyna is my all-time favorite WWE female wrestler. She broke into an industry that was all about testosterone, and broke that barrier down. She was a real-life Xena: Warrior Princess. Chyna quickly showed the boys in wrestling that a female can kick just as much ass as boys can... only better.
It's been heartbreaking to see how life has been for her in the years following her departure from the WWE.
I am deeply saddened by her death, and my thoughts are with her friends and family at this time.

Gone too soon, but never forgotton. Chyna may be gone, but her legacy will live on forever. RIP Joan Marie "Chyna" Laurer!
