Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month: Myositis.

Myositis is a term used to describe inflammation in the muscles. This condition may be caused by injury, infection, or autoimmune conditions.

There are several categories of Myositis:

1. Inflammatory: A condition that causes inflammation throughout the body has the potential to affect the muscles, thus causing the inflammation. A majority of these involve autoimmune conditions. Autoimmune diseases describe an event where the body attacks its own tissues. Some of the autoimmune conditions that may cause myositis include:

-Rheumatoid Arthritis
-Scleroderma
-Lupus

2. Infection: Viral infections are among the most common illnesses that can cause myositis. These viral infections include: flu, cold, and HIV.

3. Drugs: There are several medications and illicit drugs that can cause temporary damage to muscles. Some of these include: alcohol, plaquenil, statins, and cocaine.

4. Injury: Intense workouts can cause swelling and pain in the muscles. This can last anywhere from several hours to several days after a workout.

Symptoms of Myositis
-Muscle weakness
-Muscle pain
-Fatigue
-Trouble with swallowing
-Trouble with breathing
-Rash
-Cough
-Fever
-Diarrhea
-Sore throat

How is Myositis diagnosed?
If your doctor suspects that you may have myositis, he may order one or more of the following tests:

-MRI scan
-Muscle biopsy
-Blood tests

Treatment for Myositis
Once a diagnosed for Myositis has been determined, your doctor will begin treating you. Treatment consists of the following:

-Methotrexate
-Prednisone
-Imuran

Closing remarks
While Myositis isn't considered an autoimmune condition, those of us with autoimmune diseases, such as the ones listed above, are at a higher risk for it. It is important that we adhere to the treatment our doctors have provided for us so this condition does not develop.
