Why I celebrate Singles Awareness Day

single
February 14th has always been known as the day of love, or Valentine's Day. Couples all over the world shower gifts on one another, reminding each other how much they love each other. For the single person, this can get rather unsettling.

Singles all over the world find themselves cursing that fat cherub for not shooting them with the arrow of amore. If you are a single woman over 30 like me, you know the struggle is real. You find yourself cringing at all of the lovey-dovey status updates on social media. You find yourself wanting to vomit every time you see a couple kissing in public. While I am totally there with you all, I have decided to take back Valentine's Day and join millions around the world in celebrating Singles Awareness Day.

Depending on who you are, and where you are, Singles Awareness Day is celebrated on either February 14th or February 15th. Those that choose not to celebrate it on February 14th state that they do not want to buy into the commercialism of Valentine's Day.

Celebrating Singles Awareness Day is done in a variety of ways:
-Sending yourself flowers
-Planning a singles party with your single girl friends.
-Doing something special for yourself, like a spa day.

The list is endless. I've been single for nearly 6 months and I decided to bake myself a cake. At first, I was depressed about being single on Valentine's Day, but in the last couple of days, I been realizing a lot about myself. I won't get into everything that I'm dealing with, but I decided to celebrate all of the hard work I have done to get where I am at today.

As I have written many times, last year was the hardest year of my life. My long-term relationship ended, I was drinking a lot, I was very depressed about my health issues and spinal injury, and I contemplated suicide. I went into treatment and it changed my life forever. I'm 5 months sober, and I am mentally and emotionally stable for the first time in my life. I have so much to celebrate.

Ladies, if you find yourself single on February 14th, don't be discouraged. Celebrate all of the work you have done in the last year and do something for yourself. You don't need someone to complete you. You need YOU to complete YOU.
