10 big movies turning 20 this year.

The 1990s were known for their decent movies. The year 1996 was definitely the year of big blockbusters. Lets take a look back at 10 movies that are turning 20 this year:

1. Independence Day
ID4
Who could forget this edge-of-your-seat alien invasion? Independence Day starred Will Smith, Bill Pullman, and Jeff Goldblum. We watched as an all-star cast raced against time to save the world from an alien invasion. The movie ended up being the biggest movie of the year (yours truly saw it in the theater twice). The sequel to this blockbuster movie is slated to be released on June 24, 2016.

2. The Craft

This movie followed a group of teenage girls as they used witchcraft for their own personal gain. The movie starred Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, and Neve Campbell.

3. Mission: Impossible
MI
In the 80s, Tom Cruise was known for his Cocktails and Risky Business ventures. In the 90s and beyond, he reinvented himself as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible. This action spy film continues to be a fan favorite, along with its numerous sequels.

4. Twister

Twister is a weather disaster movie that starred Helen Hunt. She played Jo Harding, a tornado chaser who is hoping to get a protocol in the air that will make it easier to predict tornadoes. When her ex-husband and his new fiancĂ©e join her, drama ensues. Twister scored high in the box office in 1996 (and was my favorite movie as a teenager).

5. The First Wives Club

This movie became a big hit among female audiences with its empowering messages and hilarity. Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton did what all divorced women wish they could do: get even. The "You Don't Own Me" message still echoes in fans' minds today, and will continue to empower women for generations to come.

6. Romeo + Juliet

Before Leonardo DiCapro drowned in Titanic, he was stealing the heart of Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet. This movie was a hit among teen girls who swooned at Leonardo DiCaprio's feet.

7. Jerry Maguire

When Tom Cruise muttered "You Complete Me" to Renee Zellweger, hearts fluttered in every movie theater. Along with its romantic moments, the movie also brought a ton of laughs ("Show Me The Money!").

8. Scream

One of the things that people remember about the 1990s is the debut of the Scream movies. The first of many movies in the franchise debuted in 1996. Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard gave performances that put rocketed them to A-list status.

9. The Nutty Professor

Eddie Murphy played multiple roles in this comedy remake of the 1963 film that starred Jerry Lewis. Eddie Murphy played Sherman Klump, an overweight professor who develops a pharmaceutical to help him lose weight. In order to win his dream woman, he tests the drug on himself, changing into the arrogant "Buddy Love." The Nutty Professor performed very well at the box office in 1996.

10. Space Jam

Remember when Michael Jordan dabbled in acting? I do. In Space Jam, he plays a retired basketball player, acting alongside Looney Tunes characters. Jordan provided a fairly brilliant performance. The movie did exceptionally well at the box office. In fact, it was the highest-grossing basketball film of all-time!

Many other great movies made their mark in the cinema, including: Ransom, Eraser, Evita, Fargo, The Rock, and Mars Attacks!.

Happy 20th birthday to these exciting movies!
