Germaine Greer calls fans' acceptance of Caitlyn Jenner "misogynistic."
Germaine Greer is an outspoken and respected feminist. She is someone who had done a great deal of work for women during the 2nd wave of feminism. While she is still down for us ladies, there is one lady she is not down with: Caitlyn Jenner.
Jenner, who was born Bruce Jenner, made major headlines when she came out as transgender. She began her transition and went public with her new look over this past summer. Jenner has become (somewhat) a spokeswoman for the transgender community since coming out.
Greer believes that the acceptance that Jenner has gained this year is a prime example of misogyny:
"I think misogyny plays a really big part in all of this, that a man who goes to these lengths to become a woman will be a better woman than someone who is just born a woman.”
Greer also believes that Caitlyn is only doing all of this in order to steal the spotlight from her famous family.
It is important to note that Caitlyn Jenner began taking hormone treatments in the 1980s, before she even knew the Kardashians existed.
Despite Greer's opinions, Jenner's journey continues to gain in popularity. Her show, "I Am Cait," was picked up for a second season.
My Two Cents:
I'm not the biggest fan of Caitlyn Jenner's, but I respect her for living her life authentically. As for Germaine Greer's comments, I find myself to be slightly disappointed in her. After all the work she has done for the feminist movement, she turns her back on someone who may not have been sexually born a woman, but is still a woman between the ears. Shouldn't transgendered women be included in the feminist movement? I mean, that is the type of feminist I am: the type that sees ALL women as equal. Transgendered women are women.
I don't understand why Greer finds Caitlyn Jenner's journey to be misogynistic. The mere fact that Jenner is being discriminated against for not being (sexually) born a woman is a good reason why we need feminism, and that there is a lot of work that needs to be done until ALL women are equal. Never mind trying to become equal to men, we need to work on being equal to each other.
