Members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced earlier today that the infamous doomsday clock will stay at three minutes to midnight. The Doomsday Clock has long been a metaphor for the end of the world. Last year, the clock was set at 11:57pm, which is the closest the clock has been to midnight since the 1980s. Scientists have several reasons as to why the clock is staying at 11:57pm. They cited the tension between the United States and Russia. They also considered North Korea and their interests in testing nuclear weapons. Global warming was also mentioned as a major reason. NASA recently stated that 2015 was the warmest year on record. While maintaining the same time as last year may seem like good news, scientists at the Bulletin stated that the stance is not good news.
